A Record Preserved Almost Entirely Through Other People's Testimony

This article records tradition as it has been passed down and reported. Its sources are not yet part of the atlas's verified catalogue.

Little of Fatima of Nishapur's own teaching survives directly in her own words, a documented gap in the primary record distinct from a body of writing that simply awaits rediscovery. She is remembered chiefly through the hagiographical tradition, above all Farid al-Din Attar's later collection of Sufi biographies, a documented secondhand transmission distinct from a contemporary account set down during her own lifetime.

She is associated with an ascetic, love centered mysticism typical of early Khorasani Sufism, emphasizing direct spiritual states over formal doctrine, a documented theological orientation distinct from a systematized teaching set out in her own treatises. Later in life she was also associated with Mecca, a documented move distinct from remaining fixed in Khorasan for the whole of her life.

That the regard in which male contemporaries who were themselves major figures of early Sufism held Fatima of Nishapur is itself the historical record of her standing, preserved through Attar's later hagiography rather than through her own surviving words, marks her place in the record as a documented case where a reputation transmitted through others' testimony stands in for a first person account that Sufism's early historical record never separately preserved.
