A Position That Sets Gaudiya Vaishnavism Apart From Other Vaishnava Schools

Most Vaishnava traditions describe Krishna as the eighth of Vishnu's ten principal descents, the avatara who appeared to slay the tyrant Kamsa and to speak the Bhagavad Gita, standing alongside Rama, Narasimha and the others as one manifestation among Vishnu's own many forms. An Introduction to Hinduism records this ordering as the more widely held position across the Vaishnava traditions generally, making the Gaudiya reversal a genuine point of difference rather than a matter of emphasis both sides would otherwise state the same way. The Encyclopedia of Hinduism situates the disagreement within the broader history of Vaishnava theology, in which different lineages have argued at length over how to rank Krishna against Vishnu without settling the question in a way every tradition accepts, each lineage reading the shared scriptural corpus through its own theological commitments. Gaudiya Vaishnavism traces its own reading to the sixteenth century teacher Chaitanya and the theologians who systematized his teaching afterward, a lineage that reads the Bhagavata Purana as settling the question decisively in Krishna's favor even where other Vaishnava schools, working from the same wider scriptural tradition, continue to read the relationship the other way around.
