An Unbroken Line of Teachers

Guru parampara, an unbroken succession of teacher and disciple, is the doctrine of lineage authority that underwrites the transmission of spiritual teaching across Hindu tradition, the claim that authentic knowledge and spiritual authority pass down a continuous chain from an original, often divine or semi divine, source through a named sequence of human teachers to the present. Vedantic sampradayas, teaching lineages such as those associated with Shankara's Advaita monastic order or the Vaishnava traditions founded by figures including Ramanuja and Chaitanya, each trace their own parampara as a central credential, since a teaching's claim to authenticity rests heavily on being demonstrably continuous with a recognized founding source rather than being a later, unauthorized innovation.

The disciple's relationship to the living guru within this system is understood as more than an educational arrangement, carrying religious weight comparable to a sacred bond, since the guru is held to transmit not only doctrine but a living spiritual capacity that cannot be gained from texts alone, making initiation, diksha, into a specific lineage a significant religious event rather than a formality.
