An Epithet Meaning Omniscient Marks an Unusually Wide Body of Work

This article records tradition as it has been passed down and reported. Its sources are not yet part of the atlas's verified catalogue.

Hemachandra produced an unusually wide body of written work across multiple genres, Sanskrit and Prakrit grammars alongside poetic and historical writing and doctrinal texts, a range that crossed the boundaries between linguistic scholarship, narrative literature and religious doctrine rather than remaining inside any single one of them. His Trishashtishalakapurushacharita recounts the lives of sixty three great Jain figures, a historical and hagiographic project on its own considerable scale, while his Yogashastra stands as a doctrinal work addressed to Jain religious practice directly.

That breadth, grammar, narrative history and doctrine produced by the same author rather than divided among specialists in each, earned Hemachandra the epithet Kalikalasarvajna, the omniscient one of the current era, a title that measured his output against the whole of what a scholar working in his own historical period could be expected to master. The epithet itself is a documented contemporary and later judgment on the scale of his work rather than a later invention added to an already famous name.

A single monk scholar credited with grammars, an account of sixty three lives, and formal doctrinal writing all inside one documented body of work, and honored with a title claiming near total mastery for it, marks Hemachandra's output as exceptional in scope even measured against other prolific religious authors of the Jain tradition.
