The Profile in the Human Design Model

The 1/3 profile (Investigator / Martyr) is one of the twelve profiles of Human Design, a modern esoteric system originated in 1987 by Ra Uru Hu and presented here as a contemporary framework rather than ancient wisdom. A profile is formed from two of the six lines, a scheme the system borrows from the six lines of an I Ching hexagram and reads psychologically: the profile pairs a conscious line with an unconscious one to give an archetypal role. The 1/3 profile joins the roles named Investigator / Martyr. The line names and their meanings are Human Design's own twentieth-century reading, not a claim inherited from the Chinese classic whose six-line figures suggested the structure; they are described here as the system presents them, not as verified fact.

Human Design's own teaching gives each of the six lines a role: the first line, Investigator, is described as needing a solid personal foundation, built through study or research, before it feels safe to act; the third line, Martyr or Adaptor, is described as learning instead through direct trial and error, bonding with others through shared experience rather than shared ideas. The 1/3 profile combines a conscious need to investigate before moving with an unconscious pattern of learning by getting it wrong first, which practitioners of the system commonly describe as an investigative, somewhat solitary way of testing the world that circles back to research after each attempt, rather than a profile that settles into either mode alone.
