Human Design

Human Design is a modern synthesis, first articulated in 1987, and there is no ambiguity about that date because its founder gave it himself.

Ra Uru Hu, born Alan Robert Krakower, a Canadian formerly working in advertising and media, reported an encounter on the island of Ibiza in January 1987 with a presence he called the Voice, over eight days, during which the system was dictated to him. That is the movement's own account of its origin, and it is not offered as a scholarly reconstruction of anything older.

What the system assembles is identifiable, and the components are much older than the assembly. The sixty-four hexagrams of the I Ching supply the gates. A modified Kabbalistic Tree of Life supplies the diagram, with its ten sephiroth reworked. The chakra system supplies the centres, with the classical seven expanded to nine. And astrology supplies the input: planetary positions determine which gates are activated.

The chart, called the bodygraph, is calculated from two moments, the time of birth, and a second calculation for the point some three months earlier at which the Sun was about eighty-eight degrees of arc back, which the system calls the design and treats as the unconscious layer.

From the pattern of defined and undefined centres the system derives a Type, Manifestor, Generator, Manifesting Generator, Projector or Reflector, each with a Strategy for engaging with the world and an inner Authority for making decisions. Centres that are defined are read as consistent traits; centres that are open are read as areas where a person takes in and amplifies conditioning from others.

None of this exists before 1987 in this configuration, and the system's own literature does not claim otherwise.

The practical content of Human Design is a small set of instructions, and it is worth setting them out because they are what a reading actually delivers.

Manifestors, roughly a tenth of people on the system's own figures, are described as able to initiate; their strategy is to inform those affected before acting. Generators and Manifesting Generators, together the large majority, are described as having a defined sacral centre and sustainable working energy; their strategy is to respond to what life presents rather than to initiate. Projectors are described as guides who see others clearly but lack consistent self-generated energy; their strategy is to wait for invitation or recognition. Reflectors, rare, have no defined centres at all and are described as sampling the environment; their strategy is to wait a full lunar cycle before major decisions.

Authority is the second half. Depending on which centres are defined, a person is assigned a decision-making mechanism: emotional authority, in which nothing is decided in the moment and the person waits for clarity across an emotional wave; sacral, a gut response; splenic, a single instantaneous intuition; and several others. The instruction in every case is to make decisions through that channel rather than through the mind, which the system treats as unreliable for personal decisions and suited instead to reflection and communication.

Further layers include the Profile, a pair of numbers from one to six describing a life role; the Definition, describing how connected the defined centres are; and the channels and gates themselves, each carrying a description.

Practitioners describe the work as an experiment: the instruction is to live by strategy and authority for a period, usually said to be seven years, and observe the results. Framed that way the system asks to be tested by the individual rather than to be believed.

Human Design makes a claim about physical mechanism that most divinatory systems do not, and because it is a physical claim it can be assessed as one.

The system holds that neutrinos streaming from the Sun carry information, and that as they pass through the body they imprint the design described in the chart. The 88-degree design calculation is explained in the same terms. The system's literature has pointed to the discovery that neutrinos have a small but non-zero mass, established experimentally in the late 1990s, as vindication of an assertion made in 1987.

What can be said accurately is this. Neutrinos do exist, they do stream from the Sun in enormous numbers, they do pass through matter, and they do have a very small mass. What is not established, and what physics does not hold, is that they carry or transmit information of the kind the system describes, or that they imprint biological or psychological characteristics. That step is the system's own assertion, and it is not supported by the physics it cites. It should be reported as a claim of the system rather than as a finding.

The wider position is straightforward. Human Design has not been the subject of controlled study, its type categories have not been validated against any independent measure, and it does not appear in personality research. Its practitioners generally do not present it as science, and the more careful ones present it explicitly as an experiment in self-observation whose value is to be judged by the person living it.

Commercially the system is substantial: charts are generated free by many sites, and the paid layer is analysis, reports and a training path through the founding organisation and a network of analysts. Anyone buying a reading is buying an interpretation of a 1987 synthesis, and that is the honest description of the product.
