Goldziher Tests the Chain of Transmission and Finds It Was Built Later

Islamic studies applies critical historical and philological method to the Quran, hadith and early Islamic legal and theological literature, asking when a given text or doctrine actually entered the record rather than accepting its own claimed chain of transmission at face value. The Hungarian orientalist Ignac Goldziher gave the discipline its foundational modern method in Muhammedanische Studien, whose first volume appeared in 1889, arguing through detailed textual analysis that a large body of hadith attributed to the Prophet Muhammad and his earliest companions had in fact been formulated later, during the legal and theological controversies of the first Islamic centuries, and then projected backward onto an earlier authoritative figure.

Goldziher's method, testing an attributed saying or doctrine against the documented history of when it actually appears in the surviving record rather than against the tradition it claims for itself, is exactly the standard the atlas applies wherever an Islamic doctrine, legal ruling or historical claim is described. The discipline lets the atlas distinguish an early and well attested element of Islamic tradition from a later development that later sources present as original, without adopting either an apologetic or a dismissive stance toward the tradition itself.
