Izanami, Hiruko, and the Cost of Speaking First

Before Izanami and Izanagi produced the islands their own descent narrates, the Kojiki records a first attempt that went wrong. Standing on either side of the newly planted Heavenly Pillar, the two deities circled it in opposite directions on the advice of the heavenly gods, meeting to marry where their paths crossed. Izanami, arriving first at the meeting point, spoke the customary greeting before her husband did, praising his beauty. Izanagi answered in turn, but the marriage that followed produced not the islands of Japan but Hiruko, a leech child born without bones or limbs, whom the couple set adrift on a reed boat rather than count among their offspring. A second failed birth followed, the indistinct island Awashima, also not reckoned a true child. Troubled, the pair ascended to consult the assembled heavenly deities, who divined the fault by the ancient method of cracking a deer's shoulder blade over fire: the woman had spoken first, inverting the proper order between husband and wife, and the ritual itself, not the couple's fitness to parent, had produced the flawed births. Izanagi and Izanami returned to the pillar and circled it again, and this time Izanagi spoke first, greeting his wife before she could greet him. Only after that correction did the union produce the eight great islands of Japan and the generations of kami who followed. The episode reads, in the Kojiki's own account, as an origin story for a specific rule of ritual precedence between husband and wife, embedded inside the larger creation narrative rather than told apart from it.
