The Juxtaposition Cross of Need is named for Gate 19 and Gate 33, the same pair as the Cross of Retreat with sun and earth exchanged. Human Design reads Gate 19, from Hexagram 19, Approach, as sensitivity to what a community needs, materially and physically, now the more exposed gate, and Gate 33, from Hexagram 33, Retreat, as the need to withdraw and hold an experience privately before telling it. Juxtaposition Crosses are set apart from the Right Angle and Left Angle families, reserved for the four line one profile, and read as fixed almost past the point of alternative.
Its design half is Gate 1 and Gate 2. Gate 1 sits in the G, or Identity, centre and is read as the urge to give an individual creative direction some outward form; elsewhere it pairs with Gate 8 in the channel of Inspiration. Gate 2 also sits in the G centre and is read as the receptive sense of where a life is meant to go; it pairs with Gate 14 in the channel of the Beat.
Putting sensed need ahead of private retreat changes what this cross puts forward first, an outward facing sensitivity rather than an inward withdrawal, while the same Identity centre pair sits beneath it either way. Both hexagrams are old texts; pairing them this way as a life direction dates from 1987.
