The Juxtaposition Cross of Provocation is named for Gate 39 and Gate 38, both seated in the Root. Human Design reads Gate 39, from Hexagram 39, Obstruction, as the pressure that stirs feeling in others, to discover whether there is any spirit in them; and Gate 38, from Hexagram 38, Opposition, as the drive to oppose, needing something worth opposing. Juxtaposition Crosses are set apart from the Right Angle and Left Angle families, reserved for the four line one profile, and read as fixed almost past the point of alternative.
Its design half is Gate 51 and Gate 57. Gate 51 sits in the Heart, or Will, centre and is read as competitive courage that goes first and can startle others awake; it pairs with Gate 25 in the channel of Initiation. Gate 57 sits in the Spleen and is read as intuition in the present moment, read through hearing rather than sight, and belongs to the closed group of four Integration gates.
So a chart carrying this cross provokes and opposes on a Root surface, testing what spirit answers back, while beneath it a shocking initiative meets a hearing intuition that knows only the present moment. The hexagrams are ancient; grouping them into one incarnation cross is the modern system's own construction.
