The Left Angle Cross of Demands is named for Gate 52 and Gate 58. Human Design reads Gate 52, from Hexagram 52, Keeping Still, sitting in the Root, as stillness, the pressure that concentrates rather than releases, holding a person in place long enough for perspective to form; and Gate 58, from Hexagram 58, The Joyous, sitting in the Root, as vitality and the joy of being alive, expressed as the urge to improve whatever is at hand. It falls in the Left Angle family, which practitioners read as fated in flavour, serving something beyond the individual rather than a self chosen plan.
Its design half is Gate 21 and Gate 48. Gate 21 sits in the Heart or Will centre and is read as the will to control material life on one's own terms; it pairs with Gate 45 in the channel of Money. Gate 48 sits in the Spleen and is read as depth, a well of instinctive knowledge not yet useful, and a fear of being inadequate; it pairs with Gate 16 in the channel of the Wavelength.
So a chart carrying this cross holds still and presses to improve on a shared Root surface, while beneath it a will to control answers to an unspent depth. The same pair also underlies the Cross of Stillness and the Cross of Vitality, and this cross's own reversal is the Left Angle Cross of Demands. Both hexagrams are old texts; pairing them this way as a life direction dates from the system's founding in 1987.
