Legba's Worship: The Spirit Served First, Every Time

Of all the vodun and lwa descended from the Fon pantheon, Legba's worship is among the most continuous and the most structurally central, because Vodun and Vodou ceremony cannot proceed without him. Fieldwork on Vodun as practiced on the Benin coast today records Legba's shrine standing at the entrance of the family compound rather than within it, greeted with an offering before any other vodun is approached, a sequence scholarship on the tradition describes as fixed rather than optional. Benin recognized Vodun as an official religion in 1996 and instituted January 10 as a national public holiday, Fete du Vodoun, observed with public ceremony that includes the invocation of gatekeeper spirits like Legba before the day's wider observance proceeds. The same first-served sequence carries into Haitian Vodou, where Papa Legba opens every ceremony before any other lwa is served, a continuity scholarship on Haiti's own Vodou practice confirms independently of the West African record. This record states that public, structural fact of worship order and national recognition; it does not describe the interior conduct of any convent initiation or ceremony, which West African Vodun keeps closed to outsiders and which this record accordingly leaves undescribed.
