A Book Organized for Ritual Use, Not by Lineage

Mandala 9's unusual organizing principle, subject rather than authorial family, has made it a particularly important case study for scholars reconstructing how the Rig Veda as a whole moved from scattered family collections toward the single, deliberately arranged text later tradition received. Its existence shows that the compilers of the finished Rig Veda were willing to override the family-book principle entirely when a different kind of usefulness, in this case, ready availability of every Soma hymn in one place for the priests actually performing the Soma-pressing rite, took priority, evidence of a genuinely practical, liturgically minded editorial hand at work rather than a purely mechanical gathering of pre-existing family archives.

The identity of the plant later called Soma remains one of the enduring open questions in Vedic studies, since the hymns describe its physical and psychoactive effects in vivid but not botanically precise terms, and proposed identifications across modern scholarship have included various mountain plants, a fly agaric mushroom theory associated with the ethnomycologist R. Gordon Wasson, and outright skepticism that any single surviving plant can be confidently matched to the ancient descriptions, a genuinely unresolved scholarly debate rather than a settled identification. Soma's later ritual role diminished in post-Vedic Hinduism, but the god and drink remained a powerful literary and symbolic presence throughout later Sanskrit religious literature.
