The Naqshbandi Case for Silence

Sufi orders differ sharply over whether sound and music belong in the path to God, and the Naqshbandi order stands at the far end from the whirling and singing traditions like the Mevlevi and Chishti. Naqshbandi practice is built around dhikr i khafi, silent remembrance performed inwardly rather than aloud, a method its adherents trace to the Prophet Muhammad and the first caliph, Abu Bakr, and ground in a Quranic instruction to remember God inwardly, with humility, and without raising the voice. Baha al Din Naqshband, the fourteenth century founder the order takes its name from, is reported to have preferred silent dhikr specifically because its subtlety let it penetrate the heart more deeply than anything spoken or sung aloud could. On this reasoning the objection to sama, the musical audition practiced by other Sufi orders, is a claim about method within the same broader path rather than a claim that music itself is forbidden by Islamic law: the order is not arguing sama is impermissible for everyone, only that it is the wrong tool for the specific discipline it teaches, which favors restraint, discretion and interior stillness over the ecstatic states music and movement can produce. That distinction separates the Naqshbandi position from the far broader prohibition later Wahhabi and Salafi currents would build on different grounds entirely.
