The Text Two Later Schools Both Trace Themselves To

Two schools that eventually broke away from Tendai entirely both trace their own founding insight back to a text its author never intended as anything but a Tendai work. Honen and Shinran, who went on to found the independent Pure Land schools that remain among Japan's largest Buddhist traditions today, both drew directly on Genshin's Ojoyoshu, a book scholars now call the formative text of Japanese Pure Land Buddhism precisely because of that later split. Genshin himself never left Mount Hiei's institutional umbrella and could not have anticipated that his own treatise would become the intellectual foundation later generations used to argue their way out of the school he stayed inside his whole life.

The book's influence reached beyond doctrine into how death itself came to be pictured in Japanese Buddhist art. Imagery of Amida's welcoming descent, raigo, already existed before Genshin, appearing in eighth century works such as the Taima Mandala, so the Ojoyoshu did not invent the idea. What it did was systematize and popularize that imagery into the deathbed visualization practice the text itself prescribes, and Genshin may have taken part in producing some of the earliest raigo paintings himself, work later artists across succeeding centuries treated as the template for depicting Amida's descent at all.
