Its Planetary and Symbolic Identity, and Its Relation to the Alchemical Principle

Quicksilver's identification with the planet Mercury, and its alchemical symbol, a circle set above a crescent resting on a small cross, are attested consistently across the alchemical tradition with essentially no historical dispute; the symbol is also, not coincidentally, the same glyph still used today for the astronomical planet Mercury. What genuinely requires care, and what this atlas's own entry on the alchemical principle Mercury addresses directly, is the relationship between this literal liquid metal and the philosophical principle Mercury of Paracelsus's tria prima: the two share a name and a great deal of symbolic overlap, quicksilver's fluidity and volatility being exactly the qualities the principle Mercury was meant to abstract and generalize, but Paracelsus's Mercury is a principle, an active nature present in some degree within every substance, not a claim that every substance literally contains liquid metal.

Conflating the two, treating every alchemical reference to Mercury as a reference to this specific element, is a documented and common misreading that this atlas's cross-tradition connections deliberately flag rather than silently repeat. Quicksilver's own toxicity, understood only partially at the time, means that its extensive historical use in medicine and gilding alike, for all its symbolic richness, left a real and lasting trail of occupational and medical harm that modern accounts of alchemical mercury should not romanticize away.
