The character of this practice is what distinguishes it from its neighbours in Afro Brazilian religion. An offering is left at a crossroads, a cemetery gate or another threshold associated with a particular Exu or Pomba Gira, and something specific is asked for in exchange: money, a legal outcome, a love returned, protection, a score settled. The exchange is stated rather than implied, and the relationship is understood as one of obligation on both sides.
Offerings are chosen for the individual spirit. Cigars, strong drink, roses, candles and coins recur, and which items suit which spirit is knowledge held within a house. The request is generally made in plain speech rather than through elaborate liturgy, which is consistent with the practice's wider reputation as direct, urgent and this worldly.

The atlas describes the open and observable layer of the practice, which is what published scholarship documents, and does not present it as a procedure to be followed.
The urgency is part of what the practice is. People approach Quimbanda for matters that are pressing and often difficult to take anywhere else, and the tradition's reputation, inside Brazil and beyond it, rests on being willing to act where other religious options counsel patience. Understanding that is necessary to understanding why the exchange is framed as it is, rather than reading the directness as a lack of seriousness.
