Vocalic Rr: The Ranjana Letter

Vocalic rr is the eighth letter of the Ranjana varnamala, the long member of the pair whose short member is vocalic r. It is a syllabic r held for the duration of a long vowel, and it is rare in Sanskrit to the point that a reader may go through a great deal of text without meeting it. The tradition keeps it anyway, and the reason is systematic rather than practical. The vowel series is built on the principle that every simple vowel has a short and a long member, and the vocalic liquids are classed as vowels, so each of them must have a long counterpart for the scheme to hold. The letter therefore exists to complete a pattern, and a chart that omitted it would misrepresent the analysis the script embodies. Its written treatment is the same as its short partner's: an independent form, shown here, for word-initial position, and a mark beneath the consonant elsewhere.

A learner meets it on the chart, learns to draw it, recites it in its place in the order, and then in ordinary reading may never use it. That is not a fault in the system. It is what happens when a writing system is derived from a grammatical description of a language rather than assembled from the needs of its scribes. The distinction matters for anyone trying to read a chart of an unfamiliar Brahmic script. The letters are not evidence of what was written; they are evidence of what the tradition held could be written, and the two are not the same list. A rare letter tells you about the analysis, and a common one tells you about the texts.
