A Doctrine Broadened Without Being Given Up

Most Rastafari have never physically repatriated, yet the doctrine has not been abandoned in response; instead it has broadened. A large part of the movement now speaks of repatriation primarily as a mental and psychological act, the deliberate throwing off of what Rastafari call Babylon's account of who a Black person is and is worth, with physical return to Africa treated as the completion of that inner work rather than as its substitute or its precondition. Other Rastafari hold to the older, literal reading and regard the mental interpretation as a retreat from the movement's founding demand, a way of keeping the language of repatriation while quietly dropping its cost. This argument is genuinely live within the movement today and runs across its different houses and organizations rather than separating cleanly along any single institutional line. What both sides share, and what distinguishes Rastafari's version of this idea from a general immigrant longing for an ancestral homeland, is that the movement has always framed the question specifically as one of return and of right rather than as a matter of preference or opportunity, a claim about history and about what is owed rather than about where life happens to be more comfortable.
