Twenty Eight Scriptures, a Number That Moves

The earliest Shaiva Siddhanta agamas appear in the historical record in northern India around the sixth century CE, and over the following centuries the tradition spread widely across the subcontinent, its teachers connected to monastic institutions and temples and, in a number of documented cases, serving as gurus to ruling courts. The canon is conventionally described as comprising twenty eight core agamas, but the number is traditional rather than fixed: surviving lists from different lineages and periods disagree on membership, and at least one text considered doctrinally central by later commentators, the Mrigendra, is missing from several of the standard lists, a discrepancy that shows the count functioning as an organizing convention more than a literal inventory.

The tradition's most sophisticated theological systematization took place in Kashmir in the tenth century CE, in the exegetical writings of Bhatta Narayanakantha and his son Bhatta Ramakantha, whose commentaries gave the dualist Siddhanta reading of the agamas its most rigorous philosophical expression. That Kashmirian setting also produced a second, unrelated reading of a related but distinct Shaiva scriptural line: the non dual Trika tradition centered on texts such as the Shiva Sutras and the Spanda Karikas draws on the wider genre of Shiva revealed tantra without belonging to the twenty eight agama Siddhanta list itself, a distinction scholarship treats as separating two independent interpretive traditions built from overlapping but not identical scriptural material.
