Threefold Peace, Repeated on Purpose

Like most shanti mantras, this prayer traditionally closes with the word shanti repeated three times, a convention explained in traditional commentary as addressing three potential sources of disturbance to peace, the physical body and natural world, other beings, and unseen or divine forces, so that the threefold repetition is not merely stylistic emphasis but a deliberate, comprehensive invocation covering distinct categories of possible obstacle. Contemporary yoga and meditation classes worldwide have widely adopted shanti mantras of this general type, including this prayer specifically, as closing or opening chants, often without extensive explanation of their original Upanishadic teacher-student context, a use that scholars of contemporary religion have noted transforms a text originally addressed to a specific paired relationship into something closer to a general aspiration for peace recited by a room of otherwise unconnected individuals.

Within more traditional Hindu educational and ritual settings, however, the prayer retains its original association with the specific relationship between a teacher and a student embarking on serious study together, recited at the formal beginning of instruction in a manner closer to its Upanishadic origin than its more generalized use in international wellness contexts. This split between traditional and adapted contemporary use is a pattern shared by several other short Sanskrit prayers that have achieved wide circulation well beyond their original ritual settings.
