Kukai's Treatise on a Body Already Awake

Kukai's short treatise Sokushin Jobutsu Gi lays out the doctrinal argument for buddhahood attained in this very body as a case built on identity rather than on effort accumulated across time. His claim is that a practitioner's own body, speech and mind are not merely analogous to the body, speech and mind of the cosmic buddha Mahavairocana, they are, properly understood, the same three mysteries appearing under different conditions, so that awakening is not a distant goal reached by gradually replacing an ordinary body with an enlightened one across countless future lives, it is the recognition of an identity that already holds. Kukai built this argument from the esoteric scriptures he brought back from Tang China after his study there in the early ninth century, reading them as teaching something the exoteric sutras available in Japan before him did not state as directly, that the gap between practitioner and buddha is conceptual rather than temporal. The claim carried real doctrinal weight against the dominant Japanese Buddhism of his day, which generally held enlightenment to be the fruit of an immense course of practice across many lifetimes, and Kukai's argument that his own esoteric path was not simply faster but different in kind became Shingon's founding distinction from the schools already established when he returned.
