The Hebrew word ezov appears in the Bible in ritual contexts: the purification rites, the Passover instruction, and figures of speech that place it at the humble end of a scale running from the cedar downward. English translations render it hyssop, which is the name of a European plant, Hyssopus officinalis, that does not grow wild in the southern Levant.
This investigation, published in 1988, argued instead for the carvacrol chemotype of the plant then classified as Majorana syriaca and now as Origanum syriacum, Syrian oregano. The argument runs through ecology and use rather than through any ancient botanical description, because none exists: the plant grows where the texts assume ezov grows, it has the physical form the ritual uses require, and it stands at the head of a long regional tradition of oregano group herbs whose use the authors trace comparatively.
The reasoning is careful and the conclusion is widely accepted, but it remains an inference from later regional practice back to an ancient word. The atlas records it as the study the identification rests on, and records what kind of argument it is.
The translation convention is itself part of the problem. Once a Hebrew word has been rendered by the name of a specific European plant in Bible after Bible for centuries, the identification acquires a solidity nothing in the underlying evidence supports, and readers meet the answer before they meet the question. Setting out what kind of case has actually been made is the only way to restore the question to view.
