The Vedic patha system begins with samhita patha, reciting the Vedic text continuously exactly as it stands, its words joined by the sandhi rules of connected Sanskrit speech, and proceeds to pada patha, which separates each word out individually, undoing those sandhi joins so a listener can verify precisely which underlying words the continuous recitation actually contains. From this word by word foundation, more elaborate styles recombine adjacent words in fixed, rule governed sequences, krama patha pairing each word with the next in overlapping succession and jata patha and, most demandingly, ghanapatha weaving longer runs of words forward and backward in prescribed patterns, techniques that force every syllable to be repeated multiple times in strictly defined combinations.

The entire graduated system functions less like ordinary memorization and more like a built in verification method: because each more elaborate style depends on knowing the text with total precision at the level below it, and because the recombined patterns make any dropped, altered or misplaced syllable immediately and audibly obvious to a trained listener, the patha system allowed a purely oral culture to transmit an enormous body of text across thousands of years with a degree of accuracy modern textual scholars have found remarkably well preserved when compared across geographically separated reciting communities.
