Christian Art

An oil on canvas painting titled "Hagar and Ishmael," by the Anglo-American painter Benjamin West, begun in 1776 and reworked in 1803. It shows Hagar and her son Ishmael, sent away into the wilderness, at the moment God provides them water. Ishmael is remembered in Genesis as Abraham's firstborn son and, in later tradition, as the ancestor of the Ishmaelite peoples. Held today by the Metropolitan Museum of Art, The American Wing, under accession 95.22.8.
