Christian Art

A polychrome and gilded wood sculpture titled "Saint George and the Dragon," attributed to Hans Klocker, carved ca. 1475, showing the soldier saint slaying the dragon of legend. Depicted Subject
The dragon slaying story is a medieval addition to George's legend, absent from his earliest fourth century martyrdom accounts and only reaching wide currency across Western Europe once the thirteenth century Golden Legend carried it. Hans Klocker worked in the Alpine Tyrol region around Brixen, and this carving reflects the South Tyrolean late Gothic tradition of painted and gilded limewood sculpture that flourished there in the later fifteenth century. 1
