Custody HistoryThis panel belonged to a set of twelve English alabaster apostle panels, said to have come from a church in Zamora, Spain, that probably formed the upper register of a rood screen, standing in a line just below the rood, the large figure of the crucified Christ, as was customary in English parish churches before such screens were dismantled at the Reformation. Many hundreds of alabasters carved at Nottingham's workshops were exported abroad between the fourteenth and sixteenth centuries, some as far as Iceland and Santiago de Compostela in Spain. 1 Physical Form
