Disputed Statements

Claims this atlas currently marks as unsettled or as tested and found false. A debated fact is one scholars hold competing positions on; a debunked one has been checked against the record and found not to hold. Both are kept in view rather than quietly smoothed over, with the reasoning that put each one where it stands.

Edward Tylor brought the French word couvade into English anthropology in Researches into the Early History of Mankind and the Development of Civilization (1865) and used the custom, observances a father keeps around his child's birth, recorded from the Basque country to lowland South America to parts of India and China, as evidence for a scheme of unilinear cultural evolution and diffusion. That evolutionary scheme has since been abandoned by anthropology generally, which is why Tylor's own framing is recorded as superseded rather than merely older; the custom itself is not superseded, and is now generally read instead as a ritual assertion of the father's claim on the child or of a bond between them. The 1865 date and Tier 2 citation reflect that this source documents the tradition's own founding academic account rather than the current anthropological consensus about what couvade means.

The Encyclopedia of Religion, edited by Mircea Eliade and Lindsay Jones's second edition (Macmillan Reference, 2005), traces how Christian theology has never settled whether the New Testament's covenant in Christ fulfils or supersedes the Sinai covenant with Israel. The older supersessionist reading, that the church simply replaces Israel, was repudiated at the Second Vatican Council in 1965, which stated that the Jews remain most dear to God and rejected collective guilt for the crucifixion, and a 2015 Vatican commission text went further, stating the covenant with Israel has never been revoked. Many Protestant bodies have made comparable statements and others have not, which is why the relationship between the two covenants is recorded here as argued rather than settled.

Currently States Whether the Coyolxauhqui Stone's placement primarily commemorates the religious myth of Huitzilopochtli's victory or functions equally as political propaganda casting sacrificed war captives in the defeated goddess's role.

Art historians including Elizabeth Hill Boone read the Coyolxauhqui Stone's placement at the foot of the Templo Mayor's stairway as a deliberate political statement as much as a religious one, casting every sacrificial victim flung down those steps, often war captives from conquered peoples, in the role of the defeated goddess. Not every scholar weighs the political reading as heavily as the religious one, so the balance between the two remains an open question of interpretation rather than a settled consensus.

Concerns Contested or Appropriated Modern Use

Currently States The words spirit animal and totem are used in popular Western practice for a personal animal ally. Native scholars and communities object to both usages, on the ground that they take the vocabulary and the authority of particular Indigenous traditions and apply them to a generic and commercial practice.

Suzanne Owen's The Appropriation of Native American Spirituality (Continuum, 2008) documents the objection Indigenous communities in North America raise, ongoing and in the present tense, against the commercial "spirit animal" genre. Owen's study examines how the practice borrows specific Indigenous terms and claimed lineages, presenting them as licensing a service sold to outside customers, and sets that use against the communities' own accounts of what those terms and practices mean within their traditions. What is disputed, on Owen's reading, is not that people generally feel a kinship with animals, a widely attested feeling that belongs to no one tradition, but the specific commercial borrowing of Indigenous vocabulary and claimed authority. The atlas records the animal, records that the modern commercial practice exists, and records that this documented objection is made, without adjudicating between the parties.

According To Christianity

The Encyclopedia of Religion (Macmillan Reference, 2005) documents six positions held within Christianity on creation and evolution: Young Earth Creationism, Old Earth Creationism, Theistic Evolution, Intelligent Design, Biblical Inerrancy as a controlling premise, and non-concordist or literary readings of Genesis that treat the creation account as theological rather than scientific narrative. The encyclopedia records that Christian tradition, examined across its denominational bodies, has not settled on any one of the six.

According To Evangelicalism

The Encyclopedia of Religion (Macmillan Reference, 2005) records that some evangelicals have expressed concern, examining creation care rhetoric against traditional evangelistic priorities, that it risks distracting from evangelism or aligning the church too closely with a specific secular political program. The encyclopedia records this as a genuine internal division within evangelical Christianity rather than a settled consensus on environmental stewardship's place in Christian mission.

Historian Orlando Figes and reference compiler Micheal Clodfelter independently arrive at the same combined total, 450,015 dead across all combatants, which this atlas records as its lower bound on the strength of that convergence. A lower official count of 165,363 also circulates but undercounts non combat and disease deaths, which exceeded combat deaths on every side; this atlas does not adopt it.

Cristero War, Religious DimensionEarlier, officially favored Mexican revolutionary historiography read the Cristeros as clerically manipulated reactionaries, pawns of a conservative Church hierarchy and landowning elite resisting the 1917 constitution's progressive secular reforms, and emphasized elite manipulation and economic grievance over religious conviction. Jean Meyer's archivally grounded revisionist history, drawing on Mexican federal and church archives and firsthand accounts, challenged that reading directly: he documented the uprising as a genuine grassroots movement of devout rural Catholic communities defending their faith and their parish life against state suppression, a reading now the field's standard account.

Jean Meyer's standard scholarly history gives 90,000 to 250,000 total deaths across the whole three-year war, combatants and civilians on both sides together; this is the same figure already recorded on this atlas's own Calles-Era Persecution page, reused here rather than re-derived, since Meyer's account covers the persecution and the armed uprising it provoked as one continuous history. No compiled total specific to combat deaths alone, separate from the wider persecution's toll, exists independent of Meyer's own synthesis.

See death-toll-min: this range is Jean Meyer's own scholarly synthesis, covering combatants and civilians together across the whole three-year war, rather than an official government count, since Mexican federal casualty records from the period are incomplete and contested. No compiled total specific to combat deaths alone exists independent of Meyer's account, which this atlas's own Calles-Era Persecution page already carries the identical figure from, reused here rather than re-derived, since both pages describe the same underlying three-year conflict.

The war's religious causation is comparatively well established rather than genuinely disputed: it was fought directly over the Calles government's anti-clerical enforcement of the 1917 constitution's religious restrictions, and this atlas's own Calles-Era Persecution page already records the same underlying persecution this armed uprising answered.

Currently States Whether Crius's later association with the ram and the constellation Aries reflects a genuine early attribute of the god or a folk etymology attached to an already obscure Titan once the constellation needed a mythic patron.

Of the twelve Titans named in Hesiod, Crius receives the least individual attention from any ancient source, and modern classicists debate whether his name's echo of the Greek word for ram reflects a genuine early attribute or a later folk etymology attached to an already obscure figure once the constellation Aries needed a mythic patron. The Theogony itself gives no evidence either way, since it names him only through his marriage and offspring.

Croatia's relationship with the Catholic Church rests on four agreements concluded with the Holy See in 1996 and 1998, granting the Church state funding, tax exemptions, chaplaincies in the military and hospitals, and religious instruction in state schools on terms no other religious body in Croatia holds; sixteen other religious communities hold separate, narrower agreements granting fewer benefits. The State Department's report records this tiered arrangement as the country's current legal structure without characterising it as either unequal treatment or a legitimate recognition of the Catholic Church's particular historical role in Croatian national identity, which is how it is defended domestically. The dispute, where one exists, is between minority communities holding the narrower agreements, who read the tiered structure as unequal treatment, and the state's position that the historical concordat reflects a distinct church-state relationship. Because the concordat is a treaty-level agreement with the Holy See, revising the tier would require renegotiating an international agreement rather than passing a domestic law.
