Disputed Statements

Claims this atlas currently marks as unsettled or as tested and found false. A debated fact is one scholars hold competing positions on; a debunked one has been checked against the record and found not to hold. Both are kept in view rather than quietly smoothed over, with the reasoning that put each one where it stands.

According To Theravada

Justin Thomas McDaniel's The Lovelorn Ghost and the Magical Monk: Practicing Buddhism in Modern Thailand (Columbia University Press, 2011) examines King Chulalongkorn's late nineteenth century reform of Thai Buddhist education and monastic curriculum. McDaniel sets out two readings of the same reform: one treats the new standard curriculum and national examinations as a purification that recovered a textual Buddhism from accumulated local legend; the other, examining what the reform actually excluded, holds that the material set aside as clutter, protective texts, local saints, amulets and ghost stories, was in fact the substance of practised religion for most Thai Buddhists, and that the reform's own preferences were simply redescribed as orthodoxy. McDaniel records both camps agree on what the reform did administratively; they disagree on what it cost.

The Article is retained and its meaning is not settled. The Irish Articles of 1615, largely the work of James Ussher, were explicitly Calvinist and did name reprobation; the Irish convocation of 1634 adopted the Thirty-Nine Articles and the Irish Articles fell out of use. Neither camp has ever been excluded.

The camps, and where they sit. Courts have diverged rather than converged: the High Court of Australia in 1983, the United Kingdom Supreme Court in 2013 and the United States Internal Revenue Service in 1993 each treated it as a religion for the purpose in front of them, while the German Federal Labour Court in 1995 found the Hamburg organisation commercial in aim and the French criminal courts convicted corporate entities of organised fraud, final in 2013. The tests those bodies applied differ, so the results are not straightforwardly in conflict. In the sociology of religion the word cult is itself contested: Eileen Barker and James T. Richardson argue it has become too pejorative to work as an analytic category and prefer new religious movement, while other scholars and much investigative journalism keep it. The organisation rejects the critical characterisations and has litigated against them, sometimes successfully and sometimes not. This atlas lists the movement under New Religious Movements, which is the less loaded of the two descriptions and is a shelving decision rather than a finding that any of the above is settled.

Concerns Relation to the State

Currently States Privileged Never Established

Described by the Church of Scotland Act 1921 as spiritually independent of the state, the church calls itself Scotland's national church rather than an established one. Scholars are divided: some read the Act's royal recognition and the sovereign's coronation oath to preserve it as leaving a residual, informal establishment in place, while others hold that 1921 removed any legal establishment in the sense Church of England law still carries, since the state appoints none of its clergy and controls none of its doctrine.

Standing

Concerns Point in Dispute

Currently States Whether Pastafarianism is best read as a genuine, if unconventional, religion or as a parody that borrows religious form without religious content, and whether that distinction is even the right question to ask of it.

Camp one, following Carole Cusack's Invented Religions and the movement's own record of adherents pursuing sincere legal recognition, marriage rites and identity claims, treats Pastafarianism as functionally similar to other invented religions that scholarship already accepts as real for at least some of their adherents, in the same category as Discordianism and the Church of the SubGenius. Camp two, represented by the courts that have actually ruled on the question, most explicitly Poland's Supreme Administrative Court in 2018 and the Dutch Council of State the same year, holds that the movement was founded to mock religious belief rather than to profess it, and that its own satirical self-presentation is itself the evidence against treating it as a religion in the legal sense. Both camps read the same facts: Henderson's letter was written as protest satire, and a real population of people has since organized around it in ways that look, by their own account, like sincere religious practice. Neither this atlas nor the courts that have ruled resolve which reading is correct; New Zealand's marriage-celebrant recognition and the Netherlands' and Poland's refusals stand as contradictory answers from different states applying different legal tests to the identical set of facts.

Court-custom identification is directly disputed by other scholarship (Le Minh Khai, 2025): the aromatic is described in period sources as processed into a liquid and, by some accounts, sourced from a vine or grass flower from regions distant from the Maluku Islands, not a tree bud. Whether Confucianism is a religion capable of being established at all is a live scholarly dispute, argued by some as an ethical and political philosophy and by others as encompassing genuine religious veneration of Confucius and ancestral ritual; what is not disputed is that the Han dynasty Emperor Wu, advised by his minister Gongsun Hong and the scholar Dong Zhongshu, gave Confucian teaching formal state sponsorship around 136 BCE, founded an imperial academy built on the Five Classics, and made Confucian learning the basis of the examination system that selected China's officials for the next two thousand years, an establishment of Confucian orthodoxy in function whatever its classification in name.

Confucius (2010), Scholarly ReceptionReception splits over what kind of object the film actually is. A 2025 peer reviewed monograph situates it as a serious, if state-aligned, work of Chinese political philosophy in cinematic form, continuing a lineage that runs back to Fei Mu's 1940 Confucius. Critics writing closer to its release read it more skeptically, arguing that a government-backed biopic which pulled Avatar from roughly 1,600 two dimensional screens to clear room for its own opening was less a work of scholarship than propaganda drafted to align an ancient philosopher's authority with a modern state's preferred values of hierarchy, order and conformity. Chinese officials characterized the screen reallocation as an ordinary commercial scheduling decision; international press and much film criticism read it as a state directive. The film's own box office result, a fraction of Avatar's daily takings and a swift policy reversal restoring Avatar's screens, is documented; which interpretation of the underlying motive is correct is not something this atlas resolves.

Currently States Modern archival estimates put executions across the whole of Europe and its colonies over roughly three centuries in the tens of thousands, with the commonly cited working range running from around forty thousand to around sixty thousand, out of a substantially larger number of trials. The atlas does not assert a total.

Regional archival historians across Europe, working jurisdiction by jurisdiction from surviving trial and execution records, and synthesised by Wolfgang Behringer, Brian Levack and Julian Goodare, have each produced an estimate of the total executed across the European witch trials, and the estimates differ because the historians differ on method rather than on any ideological reading of the trials. The disputed methodological choices are how far to extrapolate a death toll for jurisdictions whose own records have been lost, using rates observed in better-documented regions, whether to count deaths in custody or under torture before a verdict, and whether prosecutions under adjacent charges belong in the same total. Behringer's Witches and Witch-Hunts: A Global History (2004) and the comparable syntheses by Levack and Goodare each state their own figure together with its margin of uncertainty and the basis for the extrapolation used to reach it. The method throughout is archival demographic reconstruction from incomplete regional court records rather than a single continent-wide census that never existed. Because the records are genuinely incomplete and the extrapolation choices are stated rather than hidden, any single number quoted without a margin and a stated basis should be treated as unsourced.

Couvade names customs in which a father observes restrictions, dietary, behavioural or confinement, around the time of his child's birth, paralleling or substituting for restrictions elsewhere placed on the mother. The Encyclopedia of Religion (2005) records that the practice, or practices carrying this name, have been reported from societies across South America, parts of Asia and elsewhere with no obvious historical connection between them, and that comparative anthropologists dispute whether these represent one genuine comparative pattern with a shared origin, or several independently arising customs sharing only a superficial resemblance once grouped under one European-coined term. The method is comparative ethnography, reading the documented cases against each other for a shared underlying logic, birth anxiety, paternal bonding and symbolic participation in childbirth have all been proposed, rather than assuming the shared name implies a shared origin. Because the geographically scattered cases have no independent evidence of historical contact or common descent, the question of a single origin remains unresolved rather than settled by the comparison itself.
