The CAIN Sutton Index of Deaths, the standard scholarly and journalistic reference for the conflict's toll, records 3,532 individually documented deaths attributable to the Troubles between 14 July 1969 and 31 December 2001, a window that runs past the Good Friday Agreement's April 1998 settlement to capture the sporadic violence that continued afterward. This atlas records death-toll-min and death-toll-max as the same single figure rather than a true range: the Sutton Index is compiled to a named person, date and circumstance for each entry rather than derived as an estimate, so there is no comparably rigorous second count to bound a genuine range against. Other tallies compiled to different inclusion criteria and closing dates are not directly comparable and are not recorded here as a second bound.
