Disputed Statements

Claims this atlas currently marks as unsettled or as tested and found false. A debated fact is one scholars hold competing positions on; a debunked one has been checked against the record and found not to hold. Both are kept in view rather than quietly smoothed over, with the reasoning that put each one where it stands.

Mantreswara's own dates are unrecorded, and reference works place him anywhere from the thirteenth to the sixteenth century CE without agreement. Some editions favor an earlier compilation closer to the thirteenth century, others a later one closer to the sixteenth, and no manuscript or external reference fixes the question. The text remains in active use by practicing astrologers today, unusual for a work of such uncertain age, which has not resolved the dating dispute among historians of Indian astral literature such as David Pingree.

According To The Gurmukhi script

Two reference works give incompatible accounts. The Encyclopaedia of Sikhism (Harbans Singh, editor-in-chief, Punjabi University, Patiala, 1998) carries the Sikh tradition that Guru Angad, the second Guru (1504-1552), devised the script. The World's Writing Systems (Peter T. Daniels and William Bright, eds., Oxford University Press, 1996), surveying the paleography of Indic scripts, holds instead that the letterforms were already in mercantile use in the Punjab as one of the Landa scripts descended from Sharada, and that comparing those existing Landa forms against the Gurmukhi letters attested from Guru Angad's era shows a fixing and standardising of a repertoire already in circulation rather than an invention from nothing. Neither side has displaced the other because the two accounts read different kinds of evidence, a community's own historical memory against a comparative script lineage, and the atlas records both without adjudicating.

According To The Coptic alphabet of Christian Egypt

The World's Writing Systems (Peter T. Daniels and William Bright, eds., Oxford University Press, 1996) surveys the small corpus of Old Coptic texts, pre-Christian magical and astrological papyri in which Egyptian was first written out using Greek letters plus a few signs borrowed from Demotic, against the standardised Coptic used in Christian scripture translation from around the third century CE onward. Comparing the two corpora, its contributors find the evidence thin enough to support two readings: that the Old Coptic magical texts already fixed the practice of writing Egyptian in Greek-based letters, or that the Christian translation project, needing a stable and teachable orthography for scripture, was the decisive act that standardised the script that survives. Because both readings draw on the same handful of surviving texts and no source describes an official act of decision, the volume treats the question as open rather than favouring either camp.

The Philippine constitution separates church and state and bars an established religion, while Sharia courts operate for the Muslim population within the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao, created by a 2019 plebiscite as an autonomous region with its own religiously specific court system for family law matters, a carve-out from the otherwise secular national court structure. Separately, and reflecting the country's large Catholic majority, Catholic teaching on the indissolubility of marriage remains influential in national civil law: the Philippines is one of the only countries in the world, along with the Vatican, without a general law allowing civil divorce, so that annulment remains the primary legal route out of a marriage for most Filipinos regardless of their own religion. The dispute recorded here has two parts, whether the Bangsamoro Sharia carve-out is compatible with the national secular framework, and whether the absence of civil divorce reflects impermissible religious influence for non-Catholic citizens as well as Catholic ones; a national divorce bill has been repeatedly proposed without passing.

Phoenician religion continues older Canaanite cult with no clean break, so no single founding point exists; historians conventionally date the start of the distinct Phoenician era, as opposed to the broader Canaanite Bronze Age culture that preceded it, to around 1200 BCE after the Bronze Age collapse. That date marks a historiographic convention for when the label Phoenician becomes standard, not a founding event.

The Wikipedia contributors' Phra Bang entry (2025 access) examines the golden Buddha statue central to Lao royal and religious tradition, traditionally said to have originated in ancient Ceylon, modern Sri Lanka. The entry's method is comparative art-historical style analysis, and it finds the statue's actual carved features point instead to Khmer manufacture, which is stylistically and chronologically inconsistent with the legendary Ceylon origin story attached to the statue in Lao chronicle tradition.

The book has long circulated under the name of Maslama al-Majriti, the Andalusi mathematician and astronomer who died in the early eleventh century. That ascription has been challenged in favour of Maslama ibn Qasim al-Qurtubi, a different Andalusi scholar of overlapping name and period with a documented interest in the occult sciences, and recent editors have followed the second identification. The atlas records the attribution as it circulates and treats neither as settled.
