Mainstream Mahayana describes the bodhisattva path as running over three incalculable aeons. The esoteric traditions claim a shorter route. Kukai argued the case directly in a treatise bearing this title, on the ground that the practitioner and the buddha Mahavairocana are not separate to begin with, so what is required is realisation rather than accumulation. Tendai made a parallel claim on the authority of the Lotus Sutra, where the dragon king's daughter attains buddhahood immediately, and the two schools argued the question against each other from the ninth century without agreeing. The wider Vajrayana makes the same promise and describes itself as the swift path on that basis. In every case the method by which the claim is realised is transmitted under initiation from a teacher and is not set out in the schools' public literature; what is public is the claim, not the means.

The Three Secrets and Why Kukai Called the Path Swift

Kukai's argument is not simply an assertion that buddhahood is quick, it rests on a specific claim about what a person already is. In his treatise on attaining buddhahood in this very body, Kukai grounds the claim in the doctrine of the three secrets, the correspondence between the practitioner's own body, speech and mind and the body, speech and mind of the cosmic buddha Mahavairocana, so that ritual practice, mudra, mantra and visualization together, is not building a connection that does not yet exist but activating a unity Kukai holds was already there from the start. Because the identity is already real, what closes the distance is realization rather than accumulation, which is the specific move that licenses calling the path swift rather than merely asserting it.

Tendai's parallel claim rests on a different textual warrant entirely. Rather than an esoteric correspondence doctrine, it points to a single narrative moment in the Lotus Sutra, the daughter of the dragon king attaining buddhahood immediately and in her present form, treated as scriptural proof that instantaneous attainment is possible within the Lotus tradition's own canon without needing Kukai's esoteric apparatus at all. The two schools reached the same conclusion, rapid buddhahood in this very body, from arguments sharing almost nothing, which is why their centuries of dispute over the claim never resolved into either side adopting the other's reasoning.

Attaining buddhahood in this very body is Kukai's central claim and the title of his own treatise on it, and it is what distinguishes the esoteric path he brought from China from the exoteric schools. The ritual method by which the claim is realised passes only under initiation and is not set out in the school's public literature.

Tendai, Denominations

Why this is disputed. Tendai claims buddhahood in this very body, and on what authority is exactly what it argued with Shingon about. Shingon founder Kukai held his own esoteric transmission gave the more direct and authoritative path to the claim, and the two schools' competing accounts of the doctrine's proper textual basis were never reconciled.

That buddhahood can be reached in this life and this body, rather than over incalculable aeons, is the Vajrayana's central promise and the ground of its self-description as the swift path. The methods are transmitted under initiation and are not set out publicly.

Positions on This Question

Buddhahood in this very body is held in Nichiren Buddhism and is claimed for the chanting of the title of the Lotus Sutra rather than for esoteric ritual, which is the point on which the claim differs from Kukai's.

Buddhahood in this very body is held in Nichiren Shoshu and is claimed for the chanting of the daimoku before the object of devotion the school preserves.

Buddhahood in this very body is held in Soka Gakkai and is claimed for lay practice in ordinary life without monastic renunciation.
