Origin 1987 to 1990

MODERN INVENTION. Red Earth is the seventeenth of the 20 Solar Seals in the MODERN Dreamspell system devised by Jose Arguelles (1987), not a traditional Maya day sign in its Dreamspell form. Its keywords are Navigation, Evolution and Synchronicity; its action is to evolve, its power is navigation, and its essence is synchronicity. It corresponds loosely to the Maya day Caban.

Origin Period
Announced by Jose Arguelles around the Harmonic Convergence of August 1987 and published in its fully worked out Dreamspell form by 1990, a modern New Age construction rather than a traditional Maya day count. 1
Place of Origin
The United States. The system was announced around the Harmonic Convergence of August 1987 and published in worked-out form in 1990. 1Tradition: Dreamspell (José Argüelles, 1987)
Creator / Originator
Jose Arguelles (1939-2011), the American art historian and New Age author who devised the system and promoted it through The Mayan Factor and the Harmonic Convergence of 1987. 1Tradition: Dreamspell (José Argüelles, 1987)
Origin of the Name
Red Earth is Arguelles substitution of 1987. The Maya day it stands in for is Caban in Yucatec, No'j among the daykeepers of highland Guatemala, and the seal name is not a translation of either. 1Tradition: Dreamspell (José Argüelles, 1987)

Contested Use
Contested or Appropriated Modern Use
Maya organisations and daykeepers in Guatemala have objected publicly to this system being taught and sold as Maya tradition, because it displaces the 260-day count their own communities keep. That count is still kept, and it is not this one. 1

Red Earth in the Dreamspell Scheme

Red Earth is the seventeenth Solar Seal, red and of the east in Arguelles's rotation, and it closes the third wavespell. Its stated triad is navigation as its power, evolving as its action and synchronicity as its essence, and it is read in Dreamspell practice for alignment, for the sense that events coincide meaningfully, and for the earth as a living body. Synchronicity here is borrowed from Jung, and its presence is a good marker of the system's actual intellectual sources, which are twentieth-century western esoteric and psychological rather than Mesoamerican.

In the Dreamspell tradition, Red Earth, Solar Seal 17, is described as governing navigation, synchronicity and the patterned unfolding of events, built from Caban's borrowed earth and movement imagery. Red Earth belongs to the Dreamspell's Red colour family, alongside Red Dragon, Red Serpent, Red Moon and Red Skywalker. The term "synchronicity" here echoes the psychologist Carl Jung's own concept of meaningful coincidence, a Western borrowing layered onto the Maya-derived name rather than a term found in K'iche' daykeeping tradition itself. Its Dreamspell wavespell is the seventeenth of twenty, three from the sequence's close.

Caban, the Day Sign Behind It

The corresponding Maya day is Kab'an, in Yucatec Caban, from the word for earth, and it is associated with the earth itself and, in several sources, with earthquakes and with the movement of the ground; the Aztec equivalent day is Ollin, movement or earthquake, which is the day-sign of the present world age in the Aztec cosmology. Colonial Yucatec sources also link it to thought or reasoning. The Dreamspell reading of navigation and synchronicity keeps the earth and adds a modern layer; the association with earthquake, which is the concrete and rather alarming content of the Aztec parallel and of some Maya readings, is not present in it.

Caban is the seventeenth of the twenty authentic Tzolk'in day signs, its imagery the earth, intelligence and synchronicity; the living K'iche' daykeeping tradition knows the corresponding day as No'j, meaning thought, knowledge or wisdom. In the directional scheme, Caban belongs to the east and the colour red, opening the Tzolk'in's fifth and final four-sign directional set. Arguelles's Solar Seal 17, Red Earth, borrows Caban's earth and synchronicity imagery closely, one of the system's more direct name-borrowings, keeping both the earth association and, loosely, the sense of intelligent, patterned movement No'j carries in K'iche' tradition.

Derived From

Caban, Tzolkin Day Signs

Why this is disputed. Jose Arguelles presented Red Earth (Solar Seal 17) of his 1980s Dreamspell system as a rediscovery of the Maya day sign Caban. Maya daykeepers who have kept the traditional 260 day count continuously reject that equivalence, since the Dreamspell count runs on a fixed Gregorian cycle out of step with the living, unbroken count, and Arguelles's own name, image and meaning for Red Earth are his invention layered onto Caban rather than a transmission of its traditional meaning.
