Enochian Call

The Call of the Thirty Aethyrs

Also Known As Call of the Thirty Aethyrs
Origin 1584

The nineteenth Enochian Call, a single text recited with the name of whichever of the thirty Aethyrs is worked, which is why the corpus is traditionally counted as forty-eight keys: eighteen fixed calls and this one call standing for the thirty.

Origin of the Name
An English descriptive title rather than a received name. This text carries no number of its own in the way the others do, because it is recited with the name of whichever of the thirty Aethyrs is being worked, and the title used here describes that use. 4
Language
Enochian (Angelical) 1
Status
Standing as a Comparative Category
A modern system making claims scholarship never entertained; it never held scholarly standing 5
Transmission
Manuscript Tradition
It is not in Sloane MS 3188 or Sloane MS 3189. Those two hold the earlier sessions, from 22 December 1581 to 30 May 1583, and the clean copy of the Liber Loagaeth, and they close a full year before the Calls were received. A reader told that the Dee material is in 3188 and 3189 has been given the wrong shelfmark for this text. 4
Manuscript Tradition
The record of the sessions in which it was received was printed by Meric Casaubon in 1659, seventy-five years after the event, which is how the Calls reached a public readership at all. 1
Manuscript Tradition
The text stands in British Library Sloane MS 3191, in John Dee's own hand, in the fair copy headed 48 Claves Angelicae and dated at Krakow between 13 April and 13 July 1584. The same manuscript volume carries De Heptarchia Mystica and Liber Scientiae. 4

Meaning in the Attesting Source
One text, recited with the name of whichever of the thirty Aethyrs is worked. That is why nineteen texts are counted as forty-eight keys: eighteen fixed calls, and this one standing for thirty. 1
Contested Use
Contested or Appropriated Modern UseSourced to the subject's own account
Aleister Crowley used this call, with the names of the thirty Aethyrs, for the scryings of 1900 and 1909 that he published in 1911 as The Vision and the Voice. That is the largest single body of modern Enochian material, and none of its content is in Dee's record. 6
Contested or Appropriated Modern Use
The Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn took the Calls into its Second Order material from 1888, and Aleister Crowley worked them from 1900, three centuries after Dee. Most of what is asserted about the Calls today, including their elemental attributions and their correspondences on the Tree of Life, belongs to those two bodies of work and is not in the Dee manuscripts. 3

The Nineteenth Call And The Forty-Eight Key Count

The nineteenth Enochian Call is a single text recited with the name of whichever of the thirty Aethyrs is worked, which is why the corpus is traditionally counted as forty eight keys rather than nineteen: eighteen fixed calls, received through Edward Kelley in 1584 and published in Meric Casaubon's 1659 edition of Dee's spiritual diaries, and this one call standing for the thirty, recited once for each Aethyr in turn.

That structure sets the nineteenth call apart from every other call in the corpus. The first eighteen are fixed texts, two general openers and sixteen calls for the four Elemental Watchtowers; the nineteenth is a single template with one variable, the Aethyr's name, substituted in turn across all thirty. Dee's own angelic informant, Illemese, frames the whole set of nineteen as entrances into knowledge of the mystical tables, and the nineteenth call is the entrance into the thirty Aethyrs specifically, the aethyric ranks that sit outside the four Watchtowers' elemental structure altogether.

Casaubon's 1659 printing is again the manuscript basis for the call's text, alongside Dee's own diary record of the sessions in which Kelley scried it. No version of the call exists independent of that transmission, and every later working of the thirty Aethyrs, whether Dee and Kelley's own or a modern practitioner's, recites the same nineteenth call with only the Aethyr's name changing.

Working The Thirty Aethyrs: Crowley's Vision And The Voice

The nineteenth call's practical afterlife is dominated by a single later working: Aleister Crowley's 1911 Vision and the Voice, in which Crowley recited the call thirty times, once for each Aethyr in descending order, and recorded the visionary material each recitation produced. That record, published as Liber CCCCXVIII, is the reason the nineteenth call and the thirty Aethyr system are, for most twentieth and twenty first century readers, the most familiar part of Dee's entire angelic corpus, better known than the two general openers or the sixteen elemental calls that precede it in the Claves Angelicae.

Crowley's working was itself downstream of the Golden Dawn's earlier study of the Enochian material, documented in Israel Regardie's published editions of the order's papers, which had already brought the Calls back into ceremonial use more than two centuries after Casaubon's printing. The thirty Aethyrs themselves, and the ninety one Governors distributed across them, are catalogued separately in this atlas; the nineteenth call is the fixed text that later magicians used to approach each one, not a description of the Aethyrs' own content.

As with the rest of the Claves Angelicae, the call's only textual basis is Casaubon's 1659 edition of Dee's diaries. Vision and the Voice records what Crowley's own working produced, not an independent manuscript witness to the call's wording, and it is read here as documented modern reception rather than as evidence about Dee and Kelley's sixteenth century sessions.
