Ezekiel

Prophets

Ezekiel is a major prophet of the Hebrew Bible, active during the Jewish exile in Babylon, and New World Encyclopedia dates his prophetic career from 592 to 570 BCE. He is regarded as the author of much of the Book of Ezekiel, which calls for a revival of faith centred on the hope of a rebuilt Temple of Jerusalem and the reestablishment of the Davidic kingdom. He gave spiritual encouragement to the exiles by assuring them that the sins of their immediate ancestors would not be held against them, and he took part in his own prophecies through fasts and other self-mortifications, performing sign acts that portrayed God's judgment on the community. He is entered here so the haftarah readings drawn from the Book of Ezekiel can be attributed to their traditional author.
