Why this is disputed. The ossuarys status as an authentic first century burial box is not disputed; what remains fiercely contested is whether the second half of its inscription, brother of Jesus, was added to a genuine ancient artifact in modern times. Epigrapher Andre Lemaire first published and defended the full inscription as ancient; the Israel Antiquities Authoritys own examining committee concluded the second half was a later addition, leading to forgery charges. The 2012 trial ended in acquittal for lack of proof beyond reasonable doubt, settling the criminal case without settling the underlying question.

Why this is disputed. Some scholars, reading the edicts severe penalties for grave violation against the backdrop of first century Judea, have proposed it responds to Roman authorities encountering reports of a bodys disappearance from a tomb, connecting it to the resurrection claim. Others read it as a routine administrative edict against tomb robbery with no connection to Judea or Christianity at all, a reading a 2020 isotope study strengthened by relocating the marbles origin to the Greek island of Kos rather than to Judea.
