The fixed star Deneb Adige lies at Pisces 5 degrees 19 minutes, of the nature of Venus and Mercury, also given as Mercury and Venus. It is Alpha Cygni, commonly called Deneb, the brilliant tail star of Cygnus the Swan and the head of the Northern Cross, a corner of the Summer Triangle; its Arabic name means the tail of the hen. It gives an ingenious, idealistic nature, gifts in the arts and sciences, and a clever, poetic mind. The fixed stars hold their places and lend their character to any planet that meets them.

Alpha Cygni, One of the Most Luminous Stars
Deneb, carried in the old astrological lists as Deneb Adige, is Alpha Cygni, a blue-white supergiant of spectral type A2 and among the most intrinsically luminous stars visible to the naked eye, radiating perhaps a hundred thousand times the light of the Sun. Its distance is genuinely uncertain, of the order of one to two and a half thousand light years, which means its true brightness is only approximately known, but it is unquestionably a giant among stars. It marks the tail of Cygnus the swan, its name is from dhanab al-dajajah, the tail of the hen, and forms the northern apex of the Summer Triangle with Vega and Altair.
Deneb's uncertain distance is a genuine and still-active problem in astrometry: even the Gaia space telescope's exceptionally precise parallax measurements struggle with extremely luminous, distant supergiants like Deneb, because such stars are intrinsically variable and their parallax angle is vanishingly small at thousands of light years, so its true luminosity, somewhere in the range of Hundred thousand times the Sun's, is still stated with real caveats even in current research. Deneb's membership in the Summer Triangle alongside Vega and Altair makes it one of the most reliably identifiable stars in the northern summer sky, despite the real uncertainty that still surrounds its exact distance and luminosity.

Venus with Mercury, an Ingenious Nature
The tradition gives Deneb the nature of Venus with Mercury, and Robson reads it for a clever, ingenious and idealistic disposition, apt in matters of art and mind, a benefic and gentle delineation. The reading belongs to the modern compiling tradition; the older layer is thin, as it is for most of the bright stars whose confident personality-readings are largely Victorian in their wording. The form Deneb Adige preserved in the astrological catalogues is a corruption of the same Arabic root that gives Deneb its name, the tail, one of several stars across the sky, in Cygnus, Aquila, Capricornus and Leo, that share the name for marking the tail of their figure.
The corrupted form Deneb Adige, preserved specifically in the old astrological lists rather than in astronomical usage, illustrates how the same Arabic root could drift into quite different-looking Latin spellings depending on which chain of manuscript copying a given compiler was working from, so that a modern reader comparing an astronomical reference book with an astrological one can easily fail to recognise that Deneb and Deneb Adige name the identical star. The tail-name pattern linking Deneb, Denebola, Deneb Algedi and Deneb Kaitos across four unrelated constellations is one of the clearest illustrations in this entire catalogue of how a single descriptive Arabic word could be recycled wherever a figure happened to have a tail worth marking.
