Cygnus, the Swan, a large bright northern constellation associated with the sign Capricorn, flying down the Milky Way in the shape of the Northern Cross. Its head is Albireo and its tail is brilliant Deneb, a corner of the Summer Triangle. In myth it is Zeus in the guise of a swan, or the loyal Cycnus who mourned Phaethon and was transformed. Astrologically Cygnus is graceful and idealistic, associated with the arts, a contemplative nature, and changeableness, with a note of hazard on the water.

The Swan That Might Be a Black Hole

Cygnus flies down the Milky Way with Deneb at its tail, but the constellation's most consequential modern discovery lies elsewhere in its body, in an object that helped convince astronomers that black holes were real rather than a mathematical curiosity.

Cygnus X-1, one of the strongest X-ray sources in the sky, was identified in the 1960s and through the following decade became the first object widely accepted by astronomers as a genuine black hole, a collapsed star so dense that not even light can escape its gravity, detected here only indirectly, through the X-rays given off by gas pulled from a visible companion star as it spirals inward. The case was strong enough, and contested enough while the evidence was still being gathered, that physicists Stephen Hawking and Kip Thorne made a wager over whether it truly was one, Hawking betting against, in what he later called an insurance policy against having worked for years on black hole theory only to see the things turn out not to exist; he conceded the bet in 1990 once the evidence had become decisive.

None of this involves the swan at all, since a black hole and the visible star feeding it are simply passengers riding along inside a constellation shaped, to the naked eye, like a bird in flight.

The dark rifts of dust visible against the Milky Way running through Cygnus, mentioned in the constellation's own article, are made of ordinary interstellar matter; Cygnus X-1 is something else again, invisible even in principle to direct sight.

Cygnus, the Swan and the Northern Cross

Cygnus, the Swan, is a large, bright northern constellation, one of Ptolemy's forty-eight, whose principal stars form the shape of a swan in flight down the length of the Milky Way, also known as the Northern Cross. Its brightest star, Deneb, marking the swan's tail, is one of the most luminous stars known and completes the Summer Triangle with Vega and Altair. In Greek myth the swan is variously Zeus in disguise or a friend of the fallen Phaethon, transformed and set in the sky. The constellation is rich in nebulae and dark rifts of the Milky Way. In astronomical tradition it is a pattern of stars rather than a zodiac sign. These are the features of Cygnus as the classical and modern traditions describe it, distinct from any astrological reading; it flies along the brightest reach of the northern Milky Way.

Cygnus borders two Hevelius constellations from 1687, Vulpecula the fox and Lacerta the lizard, the latter introduced specifically to fill a narrow, star-poor strip of sky between Cygnus, Cepheus and Andromeda that the ancient tradition had left as an unclaimed sliver between three much larger figures. The dark rifts of dust visible against the bright Milky Way background running through Cygnus are real interstellar material blocking the light of more distant stars behind them, a naked-eye-visible demonstration that the galaxy's disc contains obscuring matter as well as stars.
