All Italian Renaissance and Baroque Art

Art produced in Italy from the early fifteenth century Renaissance recovery of classical form and subject matter, through the Mannerist style of the later sixteenth century, and into the dramatic, emotionally charged Baroque of the seventeenth century, a continuous sequence of related Italian workshop traditions united by their sustained, deliberate engagement with Greco-Roman mythology and antique sculptural models as source material for new painting, fresco, bronze and marble commissions for Italian courts, churches and private patrons. Painters and sculptors of this sequence, from Sandro Botticelli and Raphael in the High Renaissance through Giorgio Vasari and Giambologna in the Mannerist period to Gian Lorenzo Bernini in the Baroque, studied and reworked classical myth directly, often citing specific antique statues and texts. Divinity Atlas artworks placed in this group are paintings, frescoes, drawings or sculptures the holding museum or institution attributes to an identified Italian Renaissance, Mannerist or Baroque artist or workshop, active in Italy across this three century span, distinguished from the ancient originals themselves and from the classicizing revival art of later centuries gathered elsewhere in this atlas.
