The 26-letter Latin (Roman) alphabet, developed in ancient Italy from the Etruscan adaptation of the Greek alphabet and carried across the Western world by Rome. Its letters have no traditional pictographic meanings or native number values; esoteric use assigns numbers to them through systems such as Pythagorean numerology, and magical ciphers such as the Theban script substitute glyphs for its letters.

From Phoenician Consonants to Roman Letters

The Roman alphabet reached Italy through Greek colonists in the south of the peninsula, whose alphabet the Etruscans, a non Indo European people occupying central Italy before Rome's rise, adapted for their own language sometime around the seventh century BC. Rome, initially a minor neighbour of Etruscan civilisation, took the alphabet in turn from the Etruscans and reshaped it further for Latin, dropping and adding a handful of letters along the way; the Etruscan alphabet, for instance, had no need for a letter G distinguished from K, and Latin's eventual G was a later Roman refinement of the letter C's shape.

Because the chain runs Phoenician to Greek to Etruscan to Latin, the Roman alphabet is, structurally, a great grandchild of the Phoenician abjad by way of two successive adaptations, each of which changed the letterforms, added or dropped characters, and in Greek's case introduced true vowel letters the Phoenician original never had. The twenty-six letter alphabet used for English today is itself a later expansion of the twenty-three letter classical Roman set, with J, U and W added during the medieval and early modern periods to distinguish sounds the Roman alphabet had originally let I and V do double duty for.

A Plain Alphabet Made Esoteric by Use

Unlike Hebrew or Greek, the Roman alphabet carries no built in numeral values or letter by letter symbolic doctrine of its own; Roman numerals are a wholly separate system of seven symbols, I, V, X, L, C, D and M, layered onto Latin rather than derived from the ordinary alphabet's letters in sequence. Esoteric traditions that want to work with the Roman alphabet numerically, the Pythagorean and Chaldean numerology systems among them, therefore have to invent a value assignment from scratch, which is exactly what those two modern systems do, each in its own incompatible way.

The alphabet's esoteric significance in Western magical practice comes almost entirely through what has been written in it and what has been substituted for it, rather than through any property of the letters themselves: grimoire traditions from the fifteenth century onward built substitution ciphers, Theban, Celestial, Malachim and Passing the River among them, that stand in one for one for these same twenty-six letters, treating the plain Roman alphabet as the hidden message underneath a more mysterious looking surface rather than as mysterious in its own right.
