Russ Hudson co-authored, with Don Richard Riso, the two books that reshaped the modern Enneagram of personality into the form most widely taught today: Personality Types: Using the Enneagram for Self Discovery, revised with Hudson as full co-author in 1996, and The Wisdom of the Enneagram (1999). Together they took the nine type system taught by Oscar Ichazo and popularized in the West by Claudio Naranjo and built it into a detailed clinical framework of levels of development, wings, instinctual variants and the Hornevian groups, a second classificatory axis drawn from Karen Horney's three neurotic trends. Hudson co-founded the Enneagram Institute with Riso to teach and certify practitioners, and co-developed the Riso Hudson Enneagram Type Indicator, a widely used self assessment questionnaire that let a reader identify their own type from a standardized set of questions rather than through a teacher's individual judgment alone.

The Third Layer: Instinctual Variants

Alongside type and wing, Riso and Hudson's framework, developed jointly and set out fully in their 1999 book The Wisdom of the Enneagram, adds a third independent layer: the instinctual variant, one of three basic survival drives, self preservation, social or sexual, that each person favors as their dominant instinct regardless of which of the nine Enneagram types they are. A self preservation dominant person of any type orients toward physical security, comfort and resources; a social dominant person orients toward group belonging, status and community; a sexual, or one to one, dominant person orients toward intense individual bonding and chemistry with particular others. Combined with the nine types and the levels of development, the instinctual variants produce twenty seven distinct subtype combinations, each type expressed through each of the three instinctual stackings.

The addition answers a gap the type and wing system alone left open: two people of the identical type and wing can look strikingly different in daily life, and Hudson and Riso's account attributes much of that difference to which instinct is dominant rather than to the type itself varying. A self preservation Eight, for instance, channels the type's characteristic assertiveness toward securing material and physical resources, where a social Eight channels the same underlying drive toward leadership and group loyalty, two visibly different personalities built on the same core type structure.

A Model Built for Assessment

The Riso Hudson Enneagram Type Indicator, developed by Hudson together with Riso, translates their clinically detailed nine type framework, levels of development, wings, triads and Hornevian groups included, into a standardized written questionnaire a reader can complete without a teacher's direct guidance. Earlier transmission of the Enneagram had depended heavily on oral teaching or a trained practitioner's individual judgment to identify a person's type; a self report instrument of this kind makes the system usable at the scale of workplace training, coaching programs and popular publishing, well past the small group settings in which Claudio Naranjo had originally taught it in the 1970s.

Building a reliable self assessment for a system this layered required decisions a purely oral teaching had never needed to make explicit: which behavioral statements distinguish one type from its neighbors under stress, how to phrase items so a respondent's own self image does not simply produce the answer they already believe about themselves, and how to validate the result against expert judgment. The instrument's design work, carried out alongside the Institute Hudson and Riso founded to teach and certify practitioners, is itself part of what shifted the modern Enneagram from a teacher transmitted practice toward a published, standardized framework that a newcomer can now enter through a questionnaire before ever meeting a teacher at all.
