Juxtaposition Cross of Ambition (54/53)

The Juxtaposition Cross of Ambition carries the same pair as the Cross of Cycles with sun and earth exchanged, Gate 54 and Gate 53, both seated in the Root. Human Design reads Gate 54, from Hexagram 54, The Marrying Maiden, as ambition, the drive to rise and transform one's material circumstances, now the more exposed gate; and Gate 53, from Hexagram 53, Development, as the pressure to begin, an impulse with often no interest in seeing a thing through. Juxtaposition Crosses are set apart from the Right Angle and Left Angle families, reserved for the four line one profile, and read as fixed almost past the point of alternative.

Its design half is Gate 32 and Gate 42, also exchanged. Gate 32 sits in the Spleen and is read as an instinct for what will last, and caution about change undertaken for its own sake; it pairs with Gate 54 in the channel of Transformation. Gate 42 sits in the Sacral centre and is read as the energy to carry a process through to its natural end; it pairs with Gate 53 in the channel of Maturation.

Putting ambition ahead of the impulse to start changes what this cross puts forward first, while the same caution about lasting and drive to finish sit beneath it regardless of order. The same pair, unreversed, also underlies the Juxtaposition Cross of Beginnings, and recurs as the Left Angle Cross of Cycles. The numbers are inherited from the I Ching; reading them as one cross belongs to the modern reading, not the classical one.

Its first article reads Gate 54 as ambition, the drive to rise and transform one's material circumstances, now the more exposed gate, and Gate 53 as the pressure to begin, an impulse with often no interest in seeing a thing through. What it does not trace is where the four gates sit on the wheel itself, the Human Design mandala's division of its sixty four gates into four Quarters, and by that measure this cross draws one gate from each of the four.

Gate 54, the personality gate here, falls in the Quarter of Mutation, purpose fulfilled through transformation. Gate 53, its personality partner, falls in the Quarter of Civilization, purpose fulfilled through form. Behind them, Gate 32 falls in the Quarter of Duality, purpose fulfilled through bonding, and Gate 42 falls in the Quarter of Initiation, purpose fulfilled through mind.

So the ambition to transform and the pressure to begin the first article reads on this cross's surface answer to the arcs of transformation and form, while the splenic instinct for what lasts and the sacral drive to finish beneath them answer to the arcs of bonding and mind. The same pair, exchanged, is this cross's own reversal, the Juxtaposition Cross of Beginnings, and, held instead in the Left Angle family, the Cross of Cycles, both orderings; the Right Angle family carries the identical pair too, as the Cross of Penetration, both orderings. Four gates, four different Quarters, no pair sharing an arc: even named in reverse order, this cross draws its Quarter reading from every corner of the wheel rather than concentrated in one.
