Juxtaposition Cross of Conflict (6/36)

The Juxtaposition Cross of Conflict is named for Gate 6 and Gate 36, the same pair as the Cross of Crisis with sun and earth exchanged. Human Design reads Gate 6, from Hexagram 6, Conflict, as the friction that both guards and opens intimate and sexual contact, now the more exposed gate, and Gate 36, from Hexagram 36, Darkening of the Light, as the turbulence of an experience that is genuinely new. Juxtaposition Crosses form their own family, belonging only to the four line one profile, and Human Design reads them as the tightest, least steerable of the three kinds.

Its design half is Gate 15 and Gate 10, both in the G, or Identity, centre. Gate 15 is read as a love of humanity broad enough to embrace extremes; elsewhere it pairs with Gate 5 in the channel of Rhythm. Gate 10 is read as conduct that stays true to one's own nature rather than to expectation; it pairs with Gate 20 in the channel of Awakening.

Putting friction ahead of crisis changes what this cross puts forward first, an admitting or refusing of contact rather than the turbulence that follows it, while the same Identity centre pair sits beneath either ordering. Both hexagrams are old texts; pairing them this way as a life direction dates from the system's founding in 1987.

Gate 6, the personality gate here, falls in the Quarter of Duality, purpose fulfilled through bonding. Gate 36, its personality partner, falls in the Quarter of Initiation, purpose fulfilled through mind. Behind them, Gate 15 falls in the Quarter of Civilization, purpose fulfilled through form, and Gate 10 falls in the Quarter of Mutation, purpose fulfilled through transformation.

So the guarding friction and the crossed threshold the first article reads on this cross's surface answer to the arcs of bonding and mind, while the broad tolerance for extremes and the loyalty to one's own nature beneath them answer to the arcs of form and transformation. The same pair, exchanged, is this cross's own reversal, the Juxtaposition Cross of Crisis, and, held instead in the Left Angle family, the Cross of the Plane, both orderings; the Right Angle family carries the identical pair too, as the Cross of Eden. Four gates, four different Quarters, no pair sharing an arc: this cross draws its whole reading from every corner of the wheel's own purpose rather than concentrated in one.
