Juxtaposition Cross of Control (21/48)

The Juxtaposition Cross of Control carries the same pair as the Left Angle Cross of Endeavor, Gate 21 and Gate 48. Human Design reads Gate 21, from Hexagram 21, Biting Through, sitting in the Heart or Will centre, as the will to control material life on one's own terms; and Gate 48, from Hexagram 48, The Well, sitting in the Spleen, as depth, a well of instinctive knowledge that is not yet useful, and a fear of being inadequate to what is asked. Juxtaposition Crosses stand apart from the other two families, tied only to the four line one profile, and are read as the most fixed direction the system names.

Its design half is Gate 54 and Gate 53, unchanged from the Cross of Endeavor, both seated in the Root. Gate 54 is read as ambition, the drive to rise and transform one's material circumstances; it pairs with Gate 32 in the channel of Transformation. Gate 53 is read as the pressure to begin, an impulse that often has no interest in seeing a thing through; it pairs with Gate 42 in the channel of Maturation.

Where the Left Angle reading holds this same will and depth as a role circumstance hands back, the Juxtaposition reading fixes it to the four line one profile instead, the same rising ambition and raw beginning beneath it either way. The same four gates also underlie the Juxtaposition Cross of Depth. The hexagrams are ancient; grouping them into one fixed cross is the modern system's own construction.

The Juxtaposition Cross of Control is named here for Gate 21 and Gate 48. Its first article reads Gate 21 as the will to control material life and the resources one calls one's own, now the more exposed gate, and Gate 48 as a well of instinctive knowledge not yet made useful. What it does not trace is where the four gates sit on the wheel itself, the Human Design mandala's division of its sixty four gates into four Quarters, and by that measure this cross draws one gate from each of the four.

Gate 21, the personality gate here, falls in the Quarter of Initiation, purpose fulfilled through mind. Gate 48, its personality partner, falls in the Quarter of Duality, purpose fulfilled through bonding. Behind them, Gate 54 falls in the Quarter of Mutation, purpose fulfilled through transformation, and Gate 53 falls in the Quarter of Civilization, purpose fulfilled through form.

So the controlled resource and the untapped well the first article reads on this cross's surface answer to the arcs of mind and bonding, while the ambition to rise and the pressure to begin beneath them answer to the arcs of transformation and form. The same pair, exchanged, is this cross's own reversal, the Juxtaposition Cross of Depth, and, held instead in the Left Angle family, the Cross of Endeavor, both orderings, sharing this same Gate 21 and Gate 48. Four gates, four different Quarters, no pair sharing an arc: this cross draws its whole reading from every corner of the wheel's own purpose rather than concentrated in one.
