Juxtaposition Cross of Vitality (58/52)

The Juxtaposition Cross of Vitality carries the same pair as the Cross of Stillness with sun and earth exchanged, Gate 58 and Gate 52, both seated in the Root. Human Design reads Gate 58, from Hexagram 58, The Joyous, as vitality and the joy of being alive, now the more exposed gate; and Gate 52, from Hexagram 52, Keeping Still, as a stillness that holds a person still long enough for perspective to form. Juxtaposition Crosses stand apart from the other two families, tied only to the four line one profile, and are read as the most fixed direction the system names.

Its design half is Gate 48 and Gate 21, also exchanged in order. Gate 48 sits in the Spleen and is read as a well of instinctive knowledge not yet made useful; it pairs with Gate 16 in the channel of the Wavelength. Gate 21 sits in the Heart, or Will, centre and is read as the will to control material life on one's own terms; it pairs with Gate 45 in the channel of Money.

Putting joy ahead of stillness changes what this cross puts forward first, while the same unspent depth and willed control sit beneath it either way. Both hexagrams are old texts; pairing them this way as a life direction dates from the system's founding in 1987.

The Juxtaposition Cross of Vitality is named here for Gate 58 and Gate 52. Its first article reads Gate 58 as vitality and the joy of being alive, now the more exposed gate, and Gate 52 as a stillness that holds a person still long enough for perspective to form. What it does not trace is where the four gates sit on the wheel itself, the Human Design mandala's division of its sixty four gates into four Quarters, and by that measure this cross draws one gate from each of the four.

Gate 58, the personality gate here, falls in the Quarter of Mutation, purpose fulfilled through transformation. Gate 52, its personality partner, falls in the Quarter of Civilization, purpose fulfilled through form. Behind them, Gate 48 falls in the Quarter of Duality, purpose fulfilled through bonding, and Gate 21 falls in the Quarter of Initiation, purpose fulfilled through mind.

So the exposed joy and the settled perspective the first article reads on this cross's surface answer to the arcs of transformation and form, while the unspent instinctive depth and the willed control beneath them answer to the arcs of bonding and mind. The same pair, exchanged, is this cross's own reversal, the Juxtaposition Cross of Stillness, and, held instead in the Left Angle family, the Cross of Demands, both orderings; the Right Angle family carries the identical pair too, as the Cross of Service, both orderings. Four gates, four different Quarters, no pair sharing an arc: this cross draws its whole reading from every corner of the wheel's own purpose rather than concentrated in one.
