Right Angle Cross of Penetration is a Right Angle Incarnation Cross built on Gate 57 and Gate 51. Gate 57, Intuitive Clarity (Hexagram 57, The Gentle), sits in the Spleen and is read as intuition in the present moment, read through hearing rather than sight; Gate 51, Shocking Initiative (Hexagram 51, The Arousing), sits in the Heart or Will centre and is read as competitive courage that goes first and can startle others awake. It sits in the Right Angle family, the most populous of the three, and Human Design reads that family as steered chiefly by personal choice. Both hexagrams are old texts; pairing them this way as a life direction dates from the system's founding in 1987.

Penetration, Intuition Answering to a Pressure to Begin

The Right Angle Cross of Penetration, named here in its reverse order as Gate 57 and Gate 51, carries the same two gates as its better known counterpart with sun and earth exchanged. Human Design reads Gate 57, from Hexagram 57, The Gentle, as intuition in the present moment, read through hearing rather than sight, now the more exposed of the pair, and Gate 51, from Hexagram 51, The Arousing, as competitive courage that goes first and can startle others awake. It belongs to the Right Angle family, and the system reads that group as personal destiny, answering mainly to the individual's own choices rather than to any role imposed from outside.

Its design half is Gate 53 and Gate 54, both in the Root. Gate 53 is read as the pressure to begin, an impulse that starts new cycles and often has no interest in seeing them through; elsewhere it pairs with Gate 42 in the channel of Maturation. Gate 54 is read as ambition, the drive to rise and transform one's material circumstances; it pairs with Gate 32 in the channel of Transformation.

Exchanging which gate carries the Sun changes what the cross puts forward first, intuition rather than shock, but the underlying material, a Root pair of beginning and ambition, is identical to the cross's better known form. The hexagrams are ancient; the pairing and its reversal both belong to the modern system, dated to 1987.

Penetration, One Gate From Each Quarter of the Wheel

This article records tradition as it has been passed down and reported. Its sources are not yet part of the atlas's verified catalogue.

The Right Angle Cross of Penetration, named here in its reverse order as Gate 57 and Gate 51, carries the same two gate pairs as its better known counterpart with sun and earth exchanged. Its first article reads Gate 57 as intuition in the present moment, read through hearing rather than sight, now the more exposed of the pair, and Gate 51 as competitive courage that goes first and can startle others awake. What it does not trace is where the four gates sit on the wheel itself, the Human Design mandala's division of its sixty four gates into four Quarters, and by that measure this ordering draws one gate from each of the four.

Gate 57, the personality gate here, falls in the Quarter of Duality, purpose fulfilled through bonding. Gate 51, its personality partner, falls in the Quarter of Initiation, purpose fulfilled through mind. Behind them, Gate 53 falls in the Quarter of Civilization, purpose fulfilled through form, and Gate 54 falls in the Quarter of Mutation, purpose fulfilled through transformation.

So the intuition and the startling courage the first article reads on this ordering's surface answer to the arcs of bonding and mind, while the pressure to begin and the rising ambition beneath them answer to the arcs of form and transformation. Four gates, four different Quarters, no pair sharing an arc: exchanging which gate carries the Sun changes what this cross puts forward first, but not which Quarters supply its four gates.
