The Right Angle Cross of Planning is named for Gate 16 and Gate 9. Human Design reads Gate 16, from Hexagram 16, Enthusiasm, sits in the Throat and is read as a natural talent refined by repetition into real skill; and Gate 9, from Hexagram 9, Small Taming, sits in the Sacral centre and is read as the capacity to attend to the small details a larger idea depends on. It belongs to the Right Angle family, the largest of the system's three, read as a personal destiny that answers mainly to the individual's own choices.

Its design half is Gate 37 and Gate 40, which are in fact the two ends of one channel, Community. Gate 37 sits in the Solar Plexus and is read as the warmth of family and friendship, specifically the bargain that holds a household together. Gate 40 sits in the Heart, or Will, centre and is read as the willpower to work, held against a real need for aloneness and rest.

So a chart carrying this cross plans through repeated skill and attention to detail on the surface, while beneath it a bargain of belonging is pressed directly against a will that needs to withdraw and recover alone, the two design gates forming one whole channel rather than two separate pressures. The hexagrams are ancient; assembling four of them into one personal cross is the modern system's own construction, dated to 1987.

Four gates, four different Quarters, no pair sharing an arc: the wheel supplies one from each corner regardless of how Planning's two gate pairs are rotated through personality and design.
