The Right Angle Cross of Planning is named here for Gate 16 and Gate 9, practiced skill exposed ahead of small detail. Its first article reads Gate 16 as a natural talent refined by repetition into real skill, and Gate 9 as the capacity to attend to the small details a larger idea depends on. What it does not trace is where the four gates sit on the wheel itself, the Human Design mandala's division of its sixty four gates into four Quarters, and by that measure this cross draws one gate from each of the four.
Gate 16, the personality gate, falls in the Quarter of Civilization, purpose fulfilled through form. Gate 9, its personality partner, falls in the Quarter of Mutation, purpose fulfilled through transformation. Behind them, Gate 37 falls in the Quarter of Initiation, purpose fulfilled through mind, and Gate 40 falls in the Quarter of Duality, purpose fulfilled through bonding.
So the proven skill and the attention to small detail the first article reads on this cross's surface answer to the arcs of form and transformation, while the household bargain and the will's need for aloneness beneath them answer to the arcs of mind and bonding, one whole channel, Community, split across the two arcs a design half always draws from. Four gates, four different Quarters, no pair sharing an arc: the wheel supplies one from each corner regardless of how Planning's two gate pairs are rotated through personality and design.
