Right Angle Cross of Service (17/18)

The Right Angle Cross of Service is named for Gate 17 and Gate 18. Human Design reads Gate 17, from Hexagram 17, Following, sitting in the Ajna, as the forming of opinions, logical viewpoints organised and offered to others; and Gate 18, from Hexagram 18, Work on the Decayed, sitting in the Spleen, as corrective instinct, an alertness to what is flawed and could be set right. It sits in the Right Angle family, the most populous of the three, and Human Design reads that family as steered chiefly by personal choice.

Its design half is Gate 58 and Gate 52. Gate 58 sits in the Root and is read as vitality, a pressure that expresses itself as the urge to improve whatever is at hand; it pairs with Gate 18 in the channel of Judgement. Gate 52 sits in the Root and is read as stillness, a pressure that concentrates rather than releases; it pairs with Gate 9 in the channel of Concentration.

So a chart carrying this cross offers opinions and corrects flaws on its surface, while beneath it a restless urge to improve answers to a stillness that holds it in place. The same two gate pairs also underlie two further role arrangements of the Cross of Service. Both hexagrams are old texts; pairing them this way as a life direction dates from the system's founding in 1987.

Its first article reads Gate 17 as logical opinions organised and offered to others, and Gate 18 as an alertness to what is flawed and could be set right. What it does not trace is where the four gates sit on the wheel itself, the Human Design mandala's division of its sixty four gates into four Quarters, and by that measure this cross draws one gate from each of the four.

Gate 17, the personality gate, falls in the Quarter of Initiation, purpose fulfilled through mind. Gate 18, its personality partner, falls in the Quarter of Duality, purpose fulfilled through bonding. Behind them, Gate 58 falls in the Quarter of Mutation, purpose fulfilled through transformation, and Gate 52 falls in the Quarter of Civilization, purpose fulfilled through form.

So the formed opinion and the corrective alertness the first article reads on this cross's surface answer to the arcs of mind and bonding, while the restless urge to improve and the held stillness beneath them answer to the arcs of transformation and form. Four gates, four different Quarters, no pair sharing an arc: the Cross of Service this entity is named for draws its whole reading from every corner of the wheel's own purpose rather than concentrated in one. With this fourth arrangement in place, every role rotation of Service's two gate pairs shares the same wheel wide spread.
