This article records tradition as it has been passed down and reported. Its sources are not yet part of the atlas's verified catalogue.
The Right Angle Cross of Service, in this ordering, is named for Gate 18 and Gate 17, corrective instinct exposed ahead of opinion. Its first article reads Gate 18 as an alertness to what is flawed and could be set right, and Gate 17 as logical opinions organised and offered to others. What it does not trace is where the four gates sit on the wheel itself, the Human Design mandala's division of its sixty four gates into four Quarters, and by that measure this ordering draws one gate from each of the four.
Gate 18, the personality gate here, falls in the Quarter of Duality, purpose fulfilled through bonding. Gate 17, its personality partner, falls in the Quarter of Initiation, purpose fulfilled through mind. Behind them, Gate 52 falls in the Quarter of Civilization, purpose fulfilled through form, and Gate 58 falls in the Quarter of Mutation, purpose fulfilled through transformation.
So the corrective alertness and the formed opinion the first article reads on this ordering's surface answer to the arcs of bonding and mind, while the held stillness and the restless urge to improve beneath them answer to the arcs of form and transformation. Four gates, four different Quarters, no pair sharing an arc: however the Cross of Service rotates its two gate pairs through personality and design, the wheel's own arithmetic supplies one from each.
