Medieval Hebrew is a literary and liturgical form of Hebrew that has existed since the fourth century. It is not commonly used as a spoken language but is written mainly by rabbis, scholars and poets. It differs from older forms of Hebrew in grammar, syntax and sentence structure, and it adds a wide variety of new vocabulary, some built from older Hebrew forms and some borrowed from other languages, especially Aramaic, Koine Greek and Latin. In this atlas the entry names the language of medieval rabbinic scholarship, poetry and liturgy, and it is kept apart from Biblical Hebrew and Mishnaic Hebrew so that works composed in this later literary register can be browsed together as one group.
